Woven With Heritage: Marie of Little-Known Makers

The Wild Stone Muse Series honours the people whose work and way of living reflect the values we hold close — intention, craftsmanship, cultural connection, and a reverence for the handmade.

For this Muse, we sit down with Marie, the founder of Little Known Makers. Marie’s work is rooted in a deep appreciation for lesser-known craftspeople and the ancient skills passed down through generations. Inspired by her early travels to Madagascar, her story is one of heritage, resourcefulness, and a quiet commitment to preserving weaving traditions through thoughtful, ethical design.

What inspired you to start Little Known Makers?

For many years, I have had a deep appreciation for the art and craftsmanship of lesser-known craftspeople. I have always been fascinated by the stories that can be told through the use of natural elements to create unique and beautiful objects. My wish is for their ancient weaving skills to be never lost.

Growing up, I travelled to Madagascar regularly, and these travels had a profound impact on me as a child. Despite the poverty of the Malagasy people, I was struck by their creativity and resourcefulness in making beautiful art and objects out of the natural elements around them.

Describe your personal style, and how it influences the products you choose for your store.

I love colourful, natural and textural materials like wool to wear, and I like to incorporate that into my home décor as well. I believe that these materials bring a sense of warmth and comfort to any space.

Is there a piece of jewellery you wear often? What does it mean to you?

Yes, I wear a bracelet that’s very special to me. My sibling and I both have the same one, it’s a traditional Madagascan piece, hand-carved with patterns I’ve always been drawn to: triangles and subtle floral motifs inspired by the island’s wild landscapes.

The bracelet carries deep cultural meaning and is considered a sacred talisman believed to offer protection. Wearing it feels like carrying a piece of home and heritage with me, a quiet reminder of connection, tradition, and the people I love.

Another piece I treasure is my mother’s necklace, a vintage pendant shaped like a delicate water drop. The aquamarine stone at its centre has a soft, calming presence, and wearing it feels like carrying a little piece of her grace and serenity with me.

How do you create space for slowness in a fast world?

I enjoy slowing down through small rituals, like choosing the right handmade ceramic mug for my tea. Each one has its own texture, weight, and design. Taking a moment to choose the one that feels right reminds me to slow down, savour the moment, and surround myself with things that bring comfort and joy. In those moments, I notice what truly matters to me.

What’s a ritual, practice, or routine you return to when you need grounding?

When I need grounding, I always return to the same practices: a swim in the ocean and my daily meditation practice. Both have a way of shifting my mood into a lighter, happier space, and I always feel more rested afterwards.
