A Life Woven With Care: Meet Mel of Two Roads Vintage

The Wild Stone Muse Series is our way of honouring the people whose way of living reflects the values we hold close ~ intentionality, craft, connection, and a quieter, more grounded way of moving through the world. Each month, we sit down with someone whose story adds depth and meaning to our community.

This is our very first Muse interview, and we couldn’t think of a more fitting place to begin than with Mel, the thoughtful soul behind Two Roads Vintage at The Old Pacific, Newrybar.

What inspired you to start Two Roads Vintage, and how did you bring your vision to life?

My love of clothing and textiles started very early rummaging through piles of my nana's fabrics who was a seamstress and had her own children's clothing label. I've been doing markets my whole adult life with vintage, remade and handmade clothing, and vintage treasures which I've picked up on my travels. I studied fashion in my 20s and early 30s, worked for years for an importer of Indian made clothing and accessories, worked for a friend Deb (my old business partner) in her Vintage store in Byron, before I eventually opened my own store in Lismore... which I had for 6 years before joining The Old Pacific.

Could you describe your personal style and how does it influence the products you choose for your store?

I'm mostly pretty daggy haha, but like to mix both feminine and masculine elements. So I am most often in a basic uniform, just like this pic of overalls paired with a feminine, Victorian style blouse. I love 60s and 70s bohemian vibes, vintage floral block prints, vintage denim, woven cottons, and anything embellished by hand, particularly embroidery. I have a big collection of reference books on textiles and traditional clothing from around the world. I love the craft of textiles and the history of clothing. I'm passionate about natural fibres and good quality fabrics.

What's a ritual, practice, or routine you return to when you need grounding?

Swimming in the ocean always feels healing and enlivening but spending time walking in the bush or sitting by a creek in nature always feels the most grounding for me.

What inspires you right now?

Anyone who hones in on their craft and lives a life authentic to them. Also small local businesses who create beautiful products or offerings that enhance their community.

Is there a piece of jewellery you wear often? What does it mean to you?

A ring that belonged to my Mum before she passed away. It was originally her Mother's ring, a gold band dotted with sapphires that is gently rounded at the edges from years of wear. It makes me feel connected to them both whenever I look at it.

How do you create space for slowness in a fast world?

I like to go camping, usually to somewhere quiet in nature, where I can sit in front of a campfire and relax and switch off.
